In SF4 molecule, lone pair of electrons ...

In `SF_4` molecule, lone pair of electrons occupies equatorial position but not axial position why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In (a) the lp is present at axial position so there are three lp-bp repulsions at `90^@`. In (b) the lp is present at equatorial position, and there are only two lp - bp repultions at 90°. Hence arrangement (h) is more stable 1.e lp occupies equitorial position.
