The bond angle in H2 O is 105^@ but in ...

The bond angle in `H_2 O` is `105^@ ` but in `H_2 S` is `92^@ `. Explain the difference.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The larger size of the .S.atom compared with .O atom, minimises the electron repulsions and allows the bonds in H S to be more purely p-type. Moreover .O. in `H_2 O` is sp hybridised but pure p-orbitals are used by .S. of `H_2 S`.
