Arrange in increasing order of extent of...

Arrange in increasing order of extent of hydrolysis `[C Cl_(4),MgCl_(2),AlCl_(3),PCl_(5),SiCl_(4)]`.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`C Cl_(4)` does not undergo hydrolysis since C does not have d orbitals. The central atom of all other elements contains empty d-orbitals and hence undergo hydrolysis. As the oxidation state of the central atom increases from +2 (in `MgCl_(2)`) to +3 (in `AlCl_(3)`) to +4 (in `SiCl_(4)`) to +5 (in `PCl_(5)`), the extent of hyrolysis increases accordingly. Thus, the overall increasing orderr of extent of hydrolysis follows the order.
`C Cl_(4) lt MgCl_(2) lt AlCl_(3) lt SiCl_(4) lt PCl_(5)`
