PCI(5) is less stable. Why?...

`PCI_(5)` is less stable. Why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`PCl_(5)` molecule has trigonal bipyramidal structure. The three equitorial bonds are equivalent. The P-Cl bond length in equitorial position is 202 pm. The two axial bonds (240 pm) are logner. The axial bonds suffer more repulsion as compared to the equatorial bonds. Hence, `PCl_(5)` is less stable.
