What is aqua-regia ? How it works to dissolve noble metals ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Aqua-regia is `3:1` mixture of conc. `HNO_(3)` and conc. HCl. The mixture contains nascent chlorine produced due to reduction of HCl by `HNO_(3)`. This chlorine reacts with noble metals to dissolve them.
`HNO_(3)+3HCl to 2H_(2)O+2Cl+NOCl`
`Au+3Cl to AuCl_(3)`
`AuCl_(3)+HCl to HAuCl_(4)` (chloroauric acid)
