When HCl reacts with powdered iron, ferrous chloride is formed, but not ferric chloride. Why?

Reasction of iron with hydrochloric acid produces ferrous chloride and liberate hydrogen.
`Fe+2HCl toFeCl_(2)+H_(2)`
This liberated hydrogen prevents the formation of ferric chloride .
