How is the theory of complexes used to sperate `Fe_2O_3` and `Al_2O_3` ?

`Al_2O_3` is separated from `Fe_2O_3` using aqueous caustic soda. `Al_2O_3` acts as acid to NaOH and forms a soluble complex. `Fe_2O_3` acts as a base and is insoluble, which is separated by filtration.
