Ag^(+) + NH3 hArr [Ag(NH3)]^(+) , K1=3....

`Ag^(+) + NH_3 hArr [Ag(NH_3)]^(+) , K_1=3.5xx10^(-3)`
, `[Ag(NH_3)]^(+) + NH_3 hArr [Ag(NH_3)_2]^(+) , K_2=1.7xx10^(-3)` . Calculate the formation constant of `[Ag(NH_3)_2]^+`. What is the instability constant ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Overell formation constant is the product of successive formation constant , `k_c = k_1 xx K_2`.
Formation constant of `[Ag(NH_3)_2]^(+) = 3.5 xx 10^(-3) xx 1.7 xx 10^(-3) = 5.95 xx 10^(-6)`.
Instabiity constant is the inverse of the stability constant, `1/(K_c) = 1/(5.95 xx 10^(-6)) = =1.7 xx 10^(7)`.
