How is the theory of complexes used to sperate `Fe_2O_3` and `Al_2O_3` ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`Al_3O_3` is separated from `Fe_2O_3` using aqueous causticv soda. `Al_2O_3` acts as acid to NaOH and forms a soluble complex. `Fe_2O_3` acts as base and is insoluble, which is separated by filtration.
`Al_2O_3 + NaOH to Na[Al(OH)_4(H_2O)_2]`.
