In an atomic bcc, what fraction of edge is not covered by atoms ?

A

`0.32`

B

`0.16`

C

`0.134`

D

`0.268`

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
C

In an atomic BCC the atoms are in contact in the body diagonal
`therefore 4r = sqrt(3)a` only 2r along edge `2r = sqrt(3a)/2 = (1.732 a)/2 = 0.866 a`
The fraction of edge not curved by atoms `1- 0.866a = 0.134 a`
