Calculate the effective molecular weight of air

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Air is a homogenous mixture. It has `79%` nitrogen and `21%` oxygen by volume.
If we take one mole of air, it would contain 0.79 mole of nitrogen and 0.21 mole of oxygen.
The weight of one mole of air `= 0.79 xx 28 +0.21 xx 32 = 28.84`
Effective molecular weight of air is 28.84
