The density of water at `0^@C` is more than that of ice at the same temperature. Why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

At `0^@C` ice melts to give water. In ice, open structure is present due to hydrogen bonding. On melting some of the hydrogen bonds break, the open space decreases} and the density increases.
