Why small drops of liquid are spherical in shape ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

A liquid air interface has energy ,so for a given volume the surface with minimum energy is the one with the least area.
The sphere has this property , area of sphere is minimum.
Hence , if gravity and other forces (for example, air resistance) were ineffective , liquid drops would be spherical.
Moreover the adhesive force between the molecules of liquid and air is less than value of cohesive force and so drops of liquid are spherical.
