Explain why
(a) To keep a piece of paper horizontal ,you should blow over , not under , it

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

When we blow over the of paper , the velocity of air increases . As a result , the pressure (P) on it decreases in accordance with the Bernoulli.s theorem whereas the pressure below remains the same as atmospheric presseure Pa. Thus , the paper remains horizontal.

(a) Obtain the de Broglie wavelength of a neutron of kinetic energy 150 eV. As you have seen in Exercise 11.31, an electron beam of this energy is suitable for crystal diffraction experiments. Would a neutron beam of the same energy be equally suitable? Explain. (m_(n) = 1.675 xx 10^(-27) kg) (b) Obtain the de Broglie wavelength associated with thermal neutrons at room temperature (27^(@)C) . Hence explain why a fast neutron beam needs to be thermalised with the environment before it can be used for neutron diffraction experiments.

An electrician has to repair an electric fault on a pole of height 5m. She needs to reach a point 1.3m below the top of the pole to undertake the repair work (see the given figure). What should be the length of the ladder that she should use which, when inclined at an angle of 60^(@) to teh horizontal, would enable her to reach the required position? Also, how far from the foot of the pole shoudl she place the foot of the ladder? (you may take sqrt3= 1.73 )

To observe the asexual reproduction method-Budding in yeast. Apparatus : Test tube, conical flask, cotton plug, cover slip, glass slide, microscope, dropper. Materials : Water, sugar, dry yeast granules. Procedure : rarr Take 100mL of water in conical flask, Add 10g sugar and dissolve it to prepare sugar solution. rarr Take 20mL of sugar solution in glass test tube. Add little amount of dry yeast granules. Shake the mixture and close the test tube tightly with cotton plug. rarr Keep the test tube in warm place for 1 to 2 hours. rarr Take one or two drops of yeast solution on the glass slide with the help of dropper. rarr Now put a cover slip over it and observe under the microscope. Explain meaning of Bud.

(b) The coolant in a chemical or a nuclear plant (i.e., the liquid used to prevent the different parts of a plant from getting too hot) should have high specific heat. (c) Air pressure in a car tyre increases during driving. (d)The climate of a harbour town is more temperate than that of a town in a desert at the same latitude.

Explain why, an optical pyrometer (for measuring high temperatures) calibrated for an ideal black body radiation gives too low a value for the temperature of a red hot iron piece in the open, but gives a correct value for the temperature when the same piece is in the temperature when the same piece is in the furnace.
