A vertical offshore structure is built to withstand a maximum stress of `10^(9)` Pa . Is the structure suitable for putting up on top of an oil well in the ocean ? Take the depth of the ocean to be roughly 3 km , and ignore ocean currents .

Here , h=3km=3000m
`rho` (density of water)`=10^(3)kg//m^(3)`
The pressure exerted by sea water `P=hrhog`
`P=(3000)(1000)(9.8)`
`P=2.94xx10^(7)Pa`
Pressure in the sea at a depth is about `3xx10^(7)` Pa . Hence , structure will be suitable for putting upon top of an oil well provided the pressure exerted by sea water is less than the maximum stress of `10^(9)` Pa it can bear . Pressure due to sea water is `3xx10^(7)` Pa since the pressure of sea water is less than the maximum.
