Density of ice is rho and that of water...

Density of ice is `rho` and that of water is `sigma` .What will be from following decrease in volume when a mass M of ice melts ?

A

`(M)/(sigma-rho)`

B

`(sigma-rho)/(M)`

C

`M[(1)/(rho)-(1)/(sigma)]`

D

`(1)/(M)[(1)/(rho)-(1)/(sigma)]`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
c

Volume of ice `V_(1)=(M)/(rho)`
Volume of water `V_(2)=(M)/(sigma)`
If `V_(1)gtV_(2)` , volume decreases for melting of ice .
Decrease in volume `=V_(1)-V_(2)=(M)/(rho)=(M)/(sigma)`
`=M[(1)/(rho)-(1)/(sigma)]`
