The piston in the cylinder head of a locomotive has a stroke (twice the amplitude) of 1.0 m. If the piston moves with simple harmonic motion with an angular frequency of 200 rad/min, what is its maximum speed ?

Amplitude of piston `A= (1)/(2) cm= 0.5 cm` and angular frequency `omega = 200 rad"/"min`
Maximum speed of piston execute SHM, `v= A omega`
`therefore v= 0.5 xx 200`
`= 100 cm"/"min = (100)/(60) = 1.67 cms^(-1)`.
