The coefficient of static friction mus, ...

The coefficient of static friction `mu`s, between block A of mass 2 kg and the table as shown in the figure is 0.2. What would be the maximum mass value of block B, so that two blocks do not move ? The string and the pully are assumed to be smooth and massless.

A

4.0 kg

B

0.2 kg

C

0.4 kg

D

2.0 kg

The correct Answer is:
C

From figure it is clear that two blocks will not move if force of static friction = weight of block B or `F_(s ) =mg`
because `f_(s ) = mu_(s ) R = mu_( s) mg`
Therefore `mu_(s ) M g= mg :. , m = mu_(s ) M.` Putting
values of `mu_(s ) ` and M we get m= 0.4 kg
