What is Lenz force ?...

What is Lenz force ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

1. The total force experienced by a charged particle moving in a region where both electric and magnetic fields are present is called Lorentz force.
2. A charge q in an electric field `vecE` experiences the electric force,
`vecF_(e)=qvecE`
3. The magnetic force experienced by the charge q moving with velocity `vecV` in the magnetic field `vecB` is given by,
`vecF_(m)=q(vecvxxvecB)`
4. So, total force experienced by the charge q due to both,
`vecF=vecF_(e)+vecF_(m)`
= `qvecE+q(vecvxxvecB)`
`thereforevecF=q[vecE+(vecvxxvecB)]` This force is known as Lorentz force.
5. Order of magnitudes of magnetic fields in a variety of physical situations.
