At a particular point in the medium, the resultant displacement produced by a number of waves is the vector sum of the displacement produced by each of the waves.
The physical effect caused by the superimposition of two or more than two waves at a particular point in the medium is called interference.
There are two types of interference :
(1) Constructive interference : When crest of one wave superpose on crest of the other wave or when tough of one wave superpose on tough of the other wave then such resulting interference is called construction interference.
(2) Destructive interference : When crest of one wave superpose on trough of the other wave or when trough of one wave superpose on crest of the other wave then such resulting interference is called destructive interference.
