From photoelectric effect and Compton effect characteristics of photon can be represented as follows:
During interaction of radiation with matter, radiation behave as real particle which is called photon.
Energy of each photon is hv and momentum of each photon is `p=(hv)/(c)`.
(3)In vacuum speed of photon is equal to speed frequency of photon then energy of each photon `E=hv=(hc)/(lambda)` and momentum of each photon `p=(hv)/(c)=(h)/(lambda)`.This is independent of intensity.
(5)According to photon theory if n number of photons are incident on unit surface in unit time then intensity of light (radiation)I=nhv where hv=energy of 1 photon ,v-frequency of incident radiation .Energy of photon does not depend on intensity of radiatio.
(6)Photon are electrically neutral. They do not get deflected by electric or magnetic field.
(7)During photon -particle collision of total energy and total momentum are conserved. Some times conservation of number of photon may not take place or new photon may be produced.
(8)Mass of photon `m=(hv)/(c^(2))`
According to Einstein.s theory of relatively,
`E=mc^(2)`
`therefore hv=mc^(2)`
`therefore m=(hv)/(c^(2))`
When intensity of incident radiation is increased no.of photon passing through unit area in given surface increases.Energy of all photon is equal .Thus, energy of photon do not depend on intensity.
Important information:
According to Einstein.s special theory of relatively realtion between energy (E) and momentum (p) of particle is given by `E=sqrt(p^(2)c^(2)+m_(0)^(2)C^(4))`
Mass of particle moving with velocity v is given by `m=(m_(0))/(sqrt(1-(v^(2)/C^(2))))`
In vacuum speed of photon is equal to that of light, rest mass of photon,
`m_(0)msqrt(1=(v^(2))/(c^(2)))=msqrt(1-1)`
`therefore m_(0)`=0therefore Energy of stationary photon E=pc
