Protein, lipid and enzymes working on carbohydrates, RNA and DNA in small amount are also seen in mitochondria.
Mitochondria mainly does three functions:
(i) Produces cellular energy in the form of ATP and releases as per needed.
(ii) Collect ATP energy and transform it and translocate it.
(iii) Regulate active transport of each substances occurring in cell membrane.
Mitochondria is considered as small biochemical factory generating ATP from food, ADP and oxygen.
During chemical process, the molecules of glucose are combusted and 38 molecules of ATP are obtained
The matrix of mitochondria contains necessary enzymes for crab.s cycle. Here ATP is synthesized.
Therefore mitochondria is called powerhouse of the cell.
