Meiosis is important for maintenance of specific number of chromosomes from generation to generation.

The number of chromosomes is definite in all organisms of a species. It is generally diploid.
A new organism is formed by formation of zygote through fertilization of reproductive cells in living organisms.
Meiosis takes place during formation of reproductive gamete cells. So reproductive cells are haploid (n) and number of their chromosomes becomes half.
Reproductive cells having haploid chromosomes attach and zygote forms in which chromosomes are haploid (2n).
Thus meiosis is important for maintenance of specific / definite number of chromosomes from generation to generation.
