Will the ascent of sap be possible without the cohesion and adhesion of the water molecules ? Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

No, ascent of sap can not be possible without properties of water like cohesive force and adhesive force as both play important role in transport of water. The causes for the some are shown below :
(i) Cohesive force holds the molecules of water in vascular tissue so no space is created there.
(ii) Adhesive force forms a thin layer between water molecules and cellulose wall of xylem in vascular tissue. So water is moved upwards by transpiration and water can be more and more transported into xylem tissue from root.
