Halophytes may show precell pressure very much higher than atmospheric pressure. Explain how this can happen ?

Text Solution

Halophytic plants are found in salty region. Cellular biochemical physiological and structural conversions in them make them adaptable to survive in this condition. They have salt producing gland in their epidermis. They remove excessive salt lying in internal tissues and maintains turgidity and become adaptable with atmospheric pressure.

A fixed thermally conducting cylinder has a radius R and height L_0 . The cylinder is open at its bottom and has a small hole at its top. A piston of mass M is held at a distance L from the top surface, as shown in the figure. The atmospheric pressure is P_0 . While the piston is at a distance 2L from the top, the hole at the top is sealed. The piston is then released, to a position where it can stay in equilibrium. In this condition, the distance of the piston from the top is

A manometer reads the pressure of a gas in an enclosure as shown in figure (a) When a pump removes some of the gas , the manometer reads as in figure (b). The liquid used in the manometers is mercury and the atmospheric pressure is 76 cm of mercury. (b) How would the levels change in case (b) if 13.6 cm of water (immiscible with mercury) are poured into the right limb of the manometer ? (Ignore the small change in the volume of the gas).
