Explain why `Cu^(+)` ion is not stable in aqueous solution?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`Cu^(+)` in aqueous solution disproportionates to `Cu^(2+) and Cu`
`2Cu_((aq))^(+) rarr Cu + Cu_((aq))^(2+)`
The `Cu^(2+)` is more stable because of its high hydration enthalpy than `Cu^(+)` which more than compensates the second ionization enthalpy of copper
