Oxygen forms only fluorides, but other chalcogens form different halides. Why?

The binary compound of oxygen and fluorine is called fluoride, but not oxide.
`OF_(2) and O_(2) F_(2)` are the fluorides of oxygen, with oxidation state of .O., respectively + 2 and + 1.
The binary compounds of oxygen with other halogens are known.
`eg. Cl_(2) O_(6), Cl_(2) O_(7), BrO_(3), I_(2) O_(5), I_(4) O_(9),` etc.
But they are called oxides of halogens.

Nitrogen forms several oxides. Why?

Passage - II : Sulphur forms hexahalides, tetrahalides, dihalides and monohalides, sulphur forms only hexa fluorides but not hexachlorides, hexa bromides and hexaiodides. Sulphur halides tend to hydrolyse easily. Sulphur hexa fluorides is an exception. Of the oxohalides, the most important are those of sulphur especially sulphur dichloride oxide (Thionyl chloride) SOCl_(2) and sulphurdichloride dioxide (Sulphuryl chloride) SO_(2)Cl_(2) these are also hydrolyse in water SF_(6) do not hydrolyse water because

Bismuth forms the only pentahalide with the halogen

Only iodine forms hepta -fluoride IF_(7) , but chlorine and bromine give penta -fluorides.The reason for this is

Group-II elements react with water evolving hydrogen. This reactivity increases down the group from Be to Ba. They displace hydrogen from acids except Be with oxygen Be, Mg and Ca form monoxides while Sr, Ba and Ra form peroxides on heating with hydrogen, they form metal hydrides except Be with carbon, they form carbides on heating such as acetylides, methanides and allylides. When heated with halogens they form halides having different properties. Which of the following alkaline earth metal hydroxide is amphoteric in character ?

(A) Hydrolysis of BrF_(3) gives HF and HBrO_(2) (R ) In the hydrolysis of interhalogen compounds ,lower halogen forms halide & higher halogen form oxyhalide

(A): Oxygen has highest tendency, among chalcogens, to form dinegative ion (R): Electron affinity of oxygen is highest among chacogens
