The Value of DeltaG^(@) for the formati...

The Value of `DeltaG^(@)` for the formation of `Cr_(2)O_(3)` is `-"540KJ mol"^(-1)` and that of `Al_(2)O_(3)` is `-827"KJ mol"^(-1)`. Is the reduction of `Cr_(2)O_(3)` possible with Al ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`Cr_(2) O_(3) + 2A1_(2) O + 2Cr`,
`Delta G^(@) = - 827 - (-540) = - 287 kJ`
For the reduction of `Cr_(2) O_(3) ` with A1, `Delta G^(@)` is negative . So reduction of `CR_(2) O_(3)` with aluminium is possible .
