`Fe_(2)O_(3)` is basic and `Al_(2) O_(3)` is amphoteric. Hence aqueous solution ofcaustic soda or soda ash is used to dissolve `Al_(2) O_(3)`, which forms soluble metal aluminate .
`Fe_(2)O_(3)` remains as a residue. It is separted from solution by filteration.
