The magnetic properties of NO(2) and N(2...

The magnetic properties of `NO_(2) and N_(2)O_(4)` are different. Why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`NO_(2)` molecule has unpaired electron. Hence it is paramagnetic and reactive. `NO_(2)` dimerises to give `N_(2)O_(4).N_(2)O_(4)` molecule has no unpaired electrons. Hence it is diamagnetic.
