In the preparation of `P_(4)O_(6)`, a mixture of `N_(2) and O_(2)` is used rather than pure `O_(2)` Why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Pure oxygen will oxidise `P_(4)O_(6)`  to `P_(4)O_(10)` despite an excess of `P_(4)` is kept at the start of the reaction. Hence, nitrogen gas is used as a diluant.
