What is aqua-regia ? How it works to dissolve noble metals ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Aqua-regia is `3:1` mixture of conc. `HNO_(3)` and conc. `HCI`. The mixture contains nascent chlorine produced due to reduction of `HCI` by `HNO_(3)`. This chlorine reacts with noble metals to dissolve them.
`HNO_(3)+3HClrarr 2H_(2)O+2Cl+NOCl`
`Au+3ClrarrAuCl_(3), AuCl_(3)+HClrarr HAuCl_(3)" (chloroauric acid)"`
