In the manufacture of sulphuric acid by the contact process, sulphur trioxide is not directly dissolved in water. Why?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`SO_(3)` reacts with water to form `H_(2)SO_(4)`, which is not easily condensed. It escapes in the atmosphere. It is, therefore, absorbed in conc. `H_(2)SO_(4)` to from oleum which may be diluted to form `H_(2)SO_(4)`
