R-Cl is hydrolysed to R-OH slowly but the reaction is rapid in presence of KI as catalyst. Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

KI supplies `I^(-)` ion which is strong nucleophile and hence reacts rapidly with R-Cl to form R-I. `I^(-)` is also a better leaving group than `Cl^(-)`. Hence R-I is hydrolysed rapidly to form R-OH and I. I ion is again used in converting R-Cl to R-I.
` R-Cl+H_2 O overset("slow")to R-OH +Cl`
` R-Cl +I^(-) underset(-Cl)overset("fast")to R-I underset("Fast") overset(+H_2 O) to R-OH`

The rate of a chemical reaction is increased in presence of a catalyst. This is because

A hydrogenation reaction is carried out at 500 K. If the same reaction is carried out in the presence of a catalyst at the same rate with same frequency factor, the temperature required is 400 K. What is the activation energy of the eaction. If the catalyst lowers the activation energy barrier by 16 KJ/mol?

Assertiojn (A):A catalyst increases that rate of a reaction . ReasonR): In the presence of a catalyst, the activation energy of the reaction increases.

At 25^(@)C the activation energy for a catalysed reaction is 126 KJ mol^(-1) and for uncatalysed reaction is 350 KJ mol^(-1) . How many times the rates is increased in the presence of catalyst ?

A: A catalyst increases the rate of a reaction. R: In presence of a catalyst, the activation energy of the reaction increases.

Hydrogenation of vegetable oils in presence of finely divided Nickel as catalyst. The reaction is

(A) Hydrolysis of ethyl acetate in presence of acid is a reaction of first order whereas in presence of alkali, it is a reaction of second order. (R ) Acid only acts as a catalyst whereas alkali acts as one of the reactants.
