How will the pH of brine (aq NaCl solution) be affected when it is electrolysed.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The pH of the solution will rise as NaOH is formed in the electrolytic cell Chemcial reaction occuring at cell when aqueous brine solution is electrolysed are as follows
`NaCl(aq)overset(H_(2)O)rarrNa^(+)(aq)+Cl^(-)(aq)`
Cathode `H_(2)O(l)+e^(-)rarr(1)/(2)H_(2)(g)+OH^(-)(aq)`
Anode `Cl^(-)(aq)rarr(1)/(2)Cl_(2)(g)+e^(-)`
Net reaction `NaCl(aq)+H_(2)O(l)rarrNa^(+)(aq)+OH^(-)(aq)+(1)/(2)H_(2)+(1)/(2)Cl_(2)`
