Ionic compounds are those compounds which are made up of ions. In ionic compounds the positively charged ions (cations) and negatively charged ions (anions) are held together by the strong electrostatic forces of attraction, which are known as ionic bonds or electrovalent bonds. e.g. sodium chloride (NaCl), Calcium oxide (CaO), etc.
Molecular compounds are those compounds in which the atoms of the elements share electrons via covalent bonds. Thus, in these compounds, covalent bonds are present. e.g., methane `(CH_(4))`, water `H_(2)O` etc.
