Give reasons for the following:
(i) Oxygen is a gas but sulpher is a solid.
(ii) `O_(3)` acts as a powerful oxidising agent.
(iii) `BiH_(3)` is the strongest reducing agent amongst all the hydrides of Groups 15 elements.

(i) 0xgyen is a gas but sulphur is a solid, because oxygen exists as a diatomic molecule while sulphur exists as a polyatomic :r,nolecule hence sulphur mass will be more, therefore it will have more vandet-Waal forces, hence more boiling point.
(ii) O zone act as p.owerful oxidising agent becuase it liberates atom of nascent oxygen `O_(2)rarrO_(2)+O` Monatonic oxygen is more powerful oxidizer than either `O_(2) or O_(3).`
(iii) `BiH_(3)` is strongest reducing agentdue to its lowest dissociation energy due to its longer bond length.

(ii) XeF_(6) undergoes partial hydrolysis. (Give the chemical equations involved).

Assertion (A): HNO_(3) acts only as an oxidising agent, while HNO_(2) acts both as an oxidising agnet and a reducing agent. Reason (R ): The oxidation number of N in HNO_(3) is mximum.

Among the hydrides of group 15, which is (i) most basic (ii) most stable (iii) most volatile (iv) strogest reducing agent ?

Give reasons for the following : (A) (CH_(3))_(3)P=O exists but (CH_(3))_(3)N=O does not. (B) Oxygen has less electron gain enthalpy with negative sigh than sulphur. (C ) H_(3)PO_(2) is stronger reducing agent than H_(3)PO_(3) .

(a) Account for the following : (i) Mn shows the highest oxidation state of +7 with oxygen but with fluorine it shows the highest oxidation state of +4. (ii) Cr^(2+) is a strong reducing agent. (iii) Cu^(2+) salts are coloured while Zn^(2+) salts are white. (b) Complete the following equations : (i) 2MnO_(2) + 4KOH + O_(2) overset(Delta)(to) (ii) Cr_(2)O_(7)^(2-) + 14H^(+)6I^(-) to
