In the 3d series (Sc = 21 to Zn = 30) :
(i) Which elements shows maximum number of oxidation states ?
(ii) Which elements shows only `+3` oxidation state ?
(iii) Which elements has the lowest enthalpy of atomization?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(i) Manganese (Mn) shows maximum oxidation states `+2,+3,+4,+5,+6,+7` due to maximum number of unpaired electrons
(ii) Scandium (Sc).
(iii) Scandium (Sc) because scandium has less number of unpaired electrons, weaker will be the metallic bond and lowest will be atomisation energy.
