Explain why is ortho nitrophenol more acidic than ortho methoxyphenol ?

Text Solution

Alcohol from H bonds with water due to presence of -OH group . However , hydrocarbons cannot from H bond with water .

As a result , alcohol are comparatively more soluble in water , then hydrocarbon of comparable molecular masses .
(ii) Nitro-group is an electron with drawing group at ortho position decreases the electron density in the OH bond , it easier to loss of proton . Ortho-nitro-phenol is a stronger acid but methoxy-group in an electron releasing group , it increase the electron density in the OH bond , the protone cannot be given-out easily . So , Ortho-phenol is more acidic than ortho-methoxy-phenol.
