An organic compound 'X' on heating with ...

An organic compound 'X' on heating with conc. `H_(2)SO_(4)` forms a compound 'Y' which on addition of one molecule ofhydrogen in the presence of nickel forms a compound 'Z'. One molecule of compound 'Z' on combustion forms two molecules of `CO_2` and three molecules of `H_(2)O`. Identify, giving reasons the compounds X,Y and Z. write the chemical equations for the reactions involved.

Organic compound 'X' is ethanol, (i.e., `CH_(3)-CH_(2)OH)`.
When ethanol is heated with conc. `H_(2)SO_(4)` it forms 'Y' which is ethene `(CH_(2)=CH_(2))`.
`(i) underset((X))( CH_(3)-CH_(2)OH) underset(170^(@)C)overset(Conc. H_(2)SO_(4))rarr underset ("(Ethane )(Y)")(CH_(2)+CH_(2))+H_(2)O`
`(ii) underset("(Ethene)(Y)")(CH_(2)=CH_(2)) underset("Ni Catalyst" ) overset(H_(2))rarr underset("(Ethane )(Z)")(CH_(3)-CH_(3))`
`(iii)CH_(3)-CH_(3)+(7)/(2)O_(2) overset("Combustion")rarr2CO_(2)+3H_(2)O+Heat+Light`
`:. 'X' rarr "Ethanol" CH_(3)-CH_(2)OH`
`'Y' rarr "Ethene" CH_(2)=CH_(2)`
`'Z' rarr "Ethane" CH_(3)-CH_(3)`
