A proton is bombarded on a stationary lithium nucleus. As a result of the collision, two alpha -particles are produced. If the direction of motion of the alpha -particles with the initial direction of motion makes an angles cos^-1(1//4) , find the kinetic energy of the striking proton. Given, binding energies per nucleon of Li^7 and He^4 are 5.60 and 7.06 MeV, respectively. (Assume mass of proton ~~ mass of neutron).

During alpha-decay , a nucleus decays by emitting an alpha -particle ( a helium nucleus ._2He^4 ) according to the equation ._Z^AX to ._(Z-2)^(A-4)Y+._2^4He+Q In this process, the energy released Q is shared by the emitted alpha -particle and daughter nucleus in the form of kinetic energy . The energy Q is divided in a definite ratio among the alpha -particle and the daughter nucleus . A nucleus that decays spontaneously by emitting an electron or a positron is said to undergo beta -decay .This process also involves a release of definite energy . Initially, the beta -decay was represented as ._Z^AX to ._(Z+1)^AY + e^(-)"(electron)"+Q According to this reaction, the energy released during each decay must be divided in definite ratio by the emitted e' ( beta -particle) and the daughter nucleus. While , in alpha decay, it has been found that every emitted alpha -particle has the same sharply defined kinetic energy. It is not so in case of beta -decay . The energy of emitted electrons or positrons is found to vary between zero to a certain maximum value. Wolfgang Pauli first suggested the existence of neutrinoes in 1930. He suggested that during beta -decay, a third particle is also emitted. It shares energy with the emitted beta particles and thus accounts for the energy distribution. When a nucleus of mass number A at rest decays emitting an alpha -particle , the daugther nucleus recoils with energy K . What is the Q value of the reaction ?

The compound unstabel nucleus ._(92)^(236)U often decays in accordance with the following reaction ._(92)^(236)U rarr ._(54)^(140)Xe +._(38)^(94)Sr + other particles During the reaction, the uranium nucleus ''fissions'' (splits) into the two smaller nuceli have higher nuclear binding energy per nucleon (although the lighter nuclei have lower total nuclear binding energies, because they contain fewer nucleons). Inside a nucleus, the nucleons (protons and neutrons)attract each other with a ''strong nuclear'' force. All neutrons exert approxiamtely the same strong nuclear force on each other. This force holds the nuclear are very close together at intranuclear distances. Why is a ._2^4He nucleus more stable than a ._3^4Li nucleus?

The Bohr moden does not apply when more than one electron orbit the nucleues because it does not account for the electrostatic force that the electron exert on one another. For instance , an electrically neutral lithium atom (Li) contains three electrons in orbit around a nucleus that includes three protons (Z = 3) , and Bohr's model can be used for the doubly charged positive ion of lithium (Li^(2)^(+)) that results when two electrons are removed from the neutral atom, leaving only one electron to orbit the nucleus . Obtain the ionization energy that is needed to remove the remaining electron from (Li^(2)^(+))

A small bottle contains powered beryllium Be & gaseous radon which is used as a source of alpha -particles. Netrons are produced when alpha- particles of the radon react with beryllium. The yield of this reaction is (1//4000) i.e. only one alpha -particle out of induced the reaction. Find the amount of radon (Rn^(222)) originally introduced into the source, if it prouduces 1.2 xx 10^(6) neutrons per second after 7.6 days. [ T_(1//2) of R_(n) = 3.8 days]
