Why are neurons called excitable cells ?...

Why are neurons called excitable cells ? Mention special features of the membrane of the neuron.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Nerve cells are called excited cells because their membrane is in polar state. Various types of ion pathways are located neuron fibre layer e.g. It is selective permeable for various ions. When this disturbance reaches to end region of axon it excites neuron (mostly neutral `K^(+)` ions). Due to this concentration gradient, these cells excite around the membrane. Special features of neurolemma : (a) Excitation : Nerve cells are capable of obtaining excitement and enter into active state by change in electric potential in Neurolemma. (b) Transport ability : Change in potential, transported to whole neuron from membrane. (c) To connect: Nerve cells are connected with many other to get excitement and transport in other directions. (d) Response : Reacted m essages show response as stimulies.
