Oxygen is critical for aerobic respiration. Explain its role with respect to ETS.

Text Solution

Importance of `O_(2)` in aerobic respiration : Glycolysis of glucose is done in cytoplasm and with that respiration begins. After that kreb.s cycle and at the end ETS goes in inner membrane of mitochondria, `o_(2)` is required at the last in ETS.
Where it acts as a hydrogen acceptor. `O_(2)` releases `e^(-)` from that process. If `O_(2)` is not present then electrons do not pass through Co enzyme. So proton pump is not formed and ATP is not formed. Thus `O_(2)` is necessary in oxidative phosphorylation.
