Explain gametogenesis in detail.

Verified by Experts

It is the process of formation of gametes.
There are two types of gametes, male gamete and female gamete.
Gametes are always haploid.
In some algae these two types of gametes are morphologically and physiologically similar and are usually motile, and are called as isogametes or homogametes.
Examples : Cladophora, Ulothrix.
However in a majority of sexually reproducing organism, the gametes produced are of two morphologically distinct types and are called as heterogametes.
The male gamete is small and motile and is called as antherozoid or sperm.
The female gamete is big asd non motile and is called as egg or ovum.
Parent body can be haploid or diploid but gametes are always haploid.
A haploid parent body like in several organisms belonging to Monera, Fungi, Algae and Bryophyta, gametes are produced by mitotic division.
A diploid pasrent body like pteridophytas, gymnosper, angiosperm and most of the animals gametes are produced by meiosis.
In diploid organism the meiocytes (gamete mother cell) undergo meiosis.
At the end of meiosis, only one set of chromosomes (n) gets incorporated in each gamete.
