The number of taxa exhibiting asexual reproduction is drastically reduced in higher plants (angiosperms) and higher animals (vertebrates) as compared with lower groups of plants and animals. Analyse the possible reasons for this situation.

Sexual reproduction improves the quality of progeny but reduces the overall number of the offsprings. It creates genetic variation. Hybrid vigour takes place. It can combine the effect of two beneficial mutations in the same individual. In multicellular sexual species, population consists of two sexes but only is capable of giving birth to young ones. In asexual organisms, each member of a population is capable of giving birth to offspring.
