In a flower, if the megaspore mother cell forms megaspores without undergoing meiosis and if one of the megaspores developos into an embryo sac, its nuclei would be
(A) Haploid
(B) Diploid
(C) A few haploid and a few diploid
(D) With varying ploidy

A

Haploid

B

Diploid

C

A few haploid and a few diploid

D

With varying ploidy

The correct Answer is:
B

In some specis diploid egg cell is produced without meiotic division and develops into embryo without fertilisation. It is an asexual reproduction which occurs in absence of pollinators or in strong atmosphere some species like lemon plant, cells having nuclei surrounded by embryo sac starts division and develop into embryo. This is not meiotic but done in megaspore mother cell and between mitosis deploid embryo sac is formed. It helps for desired characteristics to be stored for unlimited period. Thus it can be concluded that species having parthenocarpy produce deploid cells. During sexual reproduction white cell exhibits meiosis then haploid cells are produced and option C and D are not shown by megaspore mother cell.
