There are four atomic models
(i) Thomson model of atom .
(ii) Rutherford nuclear model of atom.
(iii) Bohr.s model of atom For hydrogen
(iv) Quantum mechanical model of atom.
1.1 Thomson in 1898 proposed that
an atom possesses a spherical shape in which the positive charge is uniformly distributed.
The electrons are embedded into in such a manner as to give the most stable electronstatic arrangement
According to Thomson the positive charge is concentrate in very small volume .
Many different names are given to this model for example plum pudding raisin pudding or watermelon.

This model can be visualised as a pudding or watermelon of positive charge with plums or seeds embedded into it.
Although this model was able to explain the overall neutrality of the atom but was not consistent with the results of later experiments .
According to Rutherford s `alpha` particle scattering experiment m ost of the space in an atom is empty that cannot explain by Thomson model.

Answer the following questions, which help you understand the difference between Thomson’s model and Rutherford’s model better.
