Explain emission and absorption spectrum

Text Solution

Absorption spectra : The electromagnetic radiation When applied an object it interact with object

`E_(1) =` lower energy state
`E_(2)` = higher energy state
`Delta E = (E_(2) - E_(1))`
= Absorbed energy in emission
Atoms molecules or ions that have absorbed radiation are said to be excited
When electron going to higher energy level specific radiation with specific energy is spectrum is called absorption spectra
An absorption spectrum is like photograhic negative of an emission spectrum
Emission spectra : The atom in existed star is not stable so by relasing energy it gain more stable state` (E_(1)` At that time emits radiation.
So it is called emission spectrum
Spectroscopy : The study of emission or absorption phase emission or absorption spectra of atom is not continous .

Explain emission line spectra and absorption spectra.

Assertion: Hydrogen atom consists of anly one electron but its emission spectrum has may lines. Reason: Only Lyman series is found in the absorption spectrum of hydrogen atom whereas in the emission spectrum, all the series are found.
