Magnetic orbital quantum number `m_(1)` gives information about the spatial orientation of the orbital with respect to standard set of co orcinate axis .
value of `m_(1)` for any shell 2l + l value of `m_(1)` are possible and these values are given
Value of `m_(1)` and number of orbitals :
Number of d- orbital :
if l=2 so total value of `m_(1) (2l + 1) = 2(2) + 1 =5`
l=2 so value of `m_(1) ` are 2,-1 0,+ 1+ 2
Number of f-orbital
if l=3 so total value of `m_(1) = 2l + 1) = 2(2) +3=7`
number of f- orbital are seven .
Each orbital in an atom therefore is defined by a set of value for n l and `m_(1) ` An orbital described by the quantum number n-2,1 =1 `m_(1) =0` is an orbital in the p subshell of the second shell . The following chart gives the relation between the sub- shell and the number of orbitals associated with it
