Name two intermolecular forces that exist between HF molecules in liquid state.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

H - F is a polar covalent molecule which possess dipole - dipole interactions. However, it contains an electronegative atom, F bonded to H atom. Therefore, H - bond is present between its molecules. Due to these H - bonds, - HF molecules are in liquid state. Hence, in liquid state, H - bonds as well as dipole dipole interactions are present within HF molecules.

Viscosity of a liuquid arises due to strong intermolecular forces existing between the molecules. Stronger the intermolecular forces, greater is the viscosity. Name the intermolecular forces existing in the following liquids and arrange them in the increasing order of their viscosities. Also given reason for the assigned order in one line. Water, hexane (CH_(3)CH_(2)CH_(2)CH_(2)CH_(2)CH_(3)) , glycerine (CH_(2)OH CH (OH) CH_(2) OH)

Explain the terms ideal and non - ideal solutions in the light of forces of interactions operating between molecules in liquid solutions.
